PRESS RELEASE -- November 27, 2000
Foege Named to Teacher Quality Working Group
Mt. Vernon - State Representative Ro Foege, D-Mt. Vernon, will represent House Democrats in a working group that will develop an
implementation plan for improving teacher quality in Iowa. Foege is one of 14 legislators selected to participate in this group.
The working group will use the teacher compensation agreement outlined by Governor Vilsack and the Legislature to develop a blueprint for the 2001
Legislative Session. The group will hold its first meeting in Des Moines on
November 29th.
"I am thrilled to be involved with the development of a plan that will mean so much to the future of our children," said Foege. "The first step to
academic excellence in the classroom is retaining and attracting quality teachers."
The working group will focus on teacher compensation, continuous improvement
in academic achievement, and strengthening teacher development. The implementation is expected to take 3-5 years with an additional investment
up to $300 million.
"I look forward to working with the Governor and the bipartisan group to develop this plan," said Foege. "We have a lot of work to do and we can't
afford to have this plan locked up in a partisan battle."
Foege is joined by Representatives Betty Gundberg (R-Polk), Danny Carrol (R-Poweshiek), Brad Hansen (R-Pottawattamie), Brent Siegrist
(R-Pottawattamie), Phil Wise (D-Lee), Mary Mascher (D-Johnson), and by Senators Don Redfern (R-Black Hawk), John Redwine (R-Woodbury), Kitty
Rehberg (R-Buchanan), Mary Kramer (R-Polk), Mike Connolly (D-Dubuque), John Kibbie (D-Palo Alto), and Mike Gronstol (D-
Pottawattamie).
