Des Moines, Iowa – State Representative Ro Foege of Mount
Vernon today supported a plan to cut property taxes for seniors and Iowa
businesses by a whopping $475 million.
“The plan I supported today was a win-win for our state,” said Foege. “Many
seniors in Iowa are on a fixed income and have no defense against higher
property taxes. As taxes rise and their budgets are squeezed, it becomes
increasingly difficult for seniors to afford basic necessities – utilities,
food, clothing, medicine. High property taxes have even forced some seniors
out of their homes. The plan I supported today would have provided
substantial property tax relief for older Iowans.”
“The plan would also have relieved the heavy property tax burden paid by
Iowa businesses that stifles expansion and job growth,” added Foege. “High
property taxes make Iowa businesses less competitive and less profitable.
It’s time we did something for established businesses. Cutting property
taxes gives Iowa businesses a better chance to grow and succeed.”
The property tax relief plan supported by Foege was voted down on a straight
party line vote in a House committee on Wednesday. Foege said the setback
will not stop him from fighting for property tax relief this year.
“This was the first of many battles over property tax relief,” Foege said.
“I remain committed to easing the tax burden on property owners and making
lasting reforms in the property tax system.”
