Des Moines, Iowa - State Representative Ro Foege of Mount
Vernon supported an accountability measure in the Iowa House today to
protect employees who expose corruption and misuse of public funds. The bill
prevents employers and supervisors from firing or retaliating against
whistleblowers.
“Iowans want and deserve accountability of their tax dollars,” said Foege.
“Employees who know that public funds are being wasted or used
inappropriately must have protections when they stand up and tell the truth.
It is essential that whistleblowers are not punished for doing the right
thing.”
Foege supported the accountability measure as an amendment to one of the
final bills considered this session, but the amendment became the victim of
politics after it was turned down on a party line vote.
“It’s unfortunate that this accountability measure failed today because
whistleblower protection is not a partisan issue,” concluded Foege. “We’ve
talked about accountability long enough, now it’s time for the Iowa
Legislature to act before we adjourn this session.”
